Frank Gehry

8-30-10

Frank Gehry was a Canadian-American Pritzker Prize winning architect. He was labeled by "Vanity Fair" as "the most important architect our age". His different styles sometimes seem unfinished and crude to people, but his art work is very consistent with the California "funk" art movement in the 1960's early 1970's. Some of his famous works included the -  Titanium covered guggenheim museum in Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA and the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

Frank had the ability to go beyond current modalities of structural definition which is knowns as the "DeCon Architecture". Instead of creating buildings, Gehry creates ad-hoc pieces of functional sculpture. Frank Gehry has explored the classical architecture themes. In these works he melds formal compositions with an exploded aesthetic.

Franks work is relevant to the art term "armature" because when he works on constructions of new and old buildings there are times where he leaves the roof and foundation exposed, so you are able to the see the framework. Also, in the assignment we are using materials such as -  metal, wire, chain, Frank uses some of the same material but including plywood, chain linked fence and other types of metal.
