Mark Bradford

Mark Bradford is an artist that transforms materials that he has found along the streets into wall-sized collages and installations that respond to different communities such as: underground communities, migrant communities, popular abandoned public spaces and emerge them all into one city. His work is informed by his personal background as a third generation merchant and its a tradition of abstract painting developed worldwide. Mark's map-like, multiple layered college refer back to the streets and building in downtown LA, but he also has images of crowds  that range from the civil rights demonstrations to the protest concerning the immigration issues.

Market Place: This installation was very interesting to me. He created an environment that had something to do with trade, public place and the way that people use it for pleasure, business, secret or meetings. It was all put together as one.  The graffiti that was shown was interesting to me because it is in the public domain, but its also full of secrets and unless you are part of it, you cant "unlock" those secrets. I see it  for its shapes and forms, but you don't always understand it. Bradford says that scanning the layers of informal advertising around Los Angeles, he feels he is “tracing ghost cities of the past. It’s the pulling off of a layer and finding another underneath.”

All I Need Is One More Chance: This is a mixed media piece -  it is painted and sculptural, formal and graffiti with the natural and artificial forms. His ideas are clear that he is trying to set a visual that resembles mapping and cultural systems. I like this piece because of the neutral colors and they so go well together. The colors show a sense of peacefulness and tender care. When you really look at the piece you start to wonder and ask questions and thats what Mark wanted. He wanted his views to walk aways still wondering yet satisfied.

Conclusion: Mark's work really caught my eye because i love art work of big city things. I love the paintings and pictures from Paris and Italy. It just grabs my attention to the beauty and i think that, that is why i like his work. His work isn't as "elegant" as the Paris and Italy pictures, its more laid back and urban. It has a unique side that i have never seen before, and i think that is why i am really interested in it.
