Vija Celmins

Celmins shows her attention to the beauty of natural scenes, usually copies from pictures that lack the subject, horizon and depth of field that are covered in blacks and grays, Celmins uses these limitless space of seascapes, night skies, and desert floor. She takes several months to get the accuracy perfect. She has a high sense of organic details and then elegance of perfection.

Spider's Web - Celmins reflects on the translucent quality of the web, lending the image a sense of discovery and wonder from the viewers point. She uses oil paints, charcoal and a print making process that matches the space with sensuous detail. I love how you can really see the detail in the spider web. There are so many lines that don't just draw you to one spot, they make you want to look at the whole thing.

Celmin's CometVija Celmins' Comet is a very interesting.. I appreciated the fact that she actually spent a year on this piece. Her patience for her work is really what makes the pieces beautiful . The drawing is very detailed and i like how it has that one shooting comet. It attracts the eye and engages you in the picture.

Saturn - She took the drawing beyond anything that i have ever considered. She turned drawing to universal, she took the night sky, the roof of our world which is always up there and sometimes we take it for granted and turned it to a comforting image. Contellations and planets usually seem cold, distant and scientific and she took them and turned them into a closer image and warm and beautiful.

Conclusion: Vija really takes her art seriously and takes her time reviewing and retouching every little aspect. I actually like her work because it is very realistic. The comet and spider-web are great pieces of work and the detail she puts into them is just amazing. She is bvery natural and is able to been seen in nature or a realistic setting.
